Hair Care Advice - Easy fixes for Common Hair Damage

Minimize Damage from Blow Drying:

Blow drying the right way can help stop the damage heat can have on your hair. Start by drying your hair with a towel before you start. Microfiber towels are said to damage the hair less then terry-cloth. The damage is minimized if your hair is not soaking wet when you begin to blow dry.

The right equipment can also make a world of difference. Exposing our hair to long periods of intense heat is never good. We often compound the damage by stretching our hair with a brush causing breaking during blow drying. The solution is to reduce the amount of time you expose your hair to high heat and use the right type of brush. Ionic dryers are recommended by some professional hairstylists because of the speed at which hair dries. Also try brushes with smooth synthetic bristles if you have breakage issues.

Shampooing Tips

Hair professionals have a few recommendations that can allow you to gain the most benefit from shampooing. When shampooing, begin by making sure your hair is soaking wet prior to using product. Sebum, oily/waxy matter secreted by our scalps, collects in our hair closest to the scalp. Target the part of your hair closest to the scalp while you are washing, typically the first 2.5 inches of the hair.

No one likes cold water but when it comes to rinsing, the colder the better. No need to torture yourself but the coldest you can tolerate is advised. Rinsing with cold water has the bonus effect of making frayed ends less obvious.

In an ideal world you would only need to wash your hair 3 times a week. Avoiding washing everyday can be a benefit for most of us. However, some of us do have oily or fine hair that looks dirty if not washed daily. If you need to clean your hair daily, try and use a good deep conditioner that stays in your hair for several days. If you apply before going to bed just remember to cover your pillow with a towel.
